About

The name

Mehen — mḥn, "the Coiled One" — is the protective serpent of Egyptian theology, the coil that wraps the sun god through the dangerous hours of the night: "Hail to thee, O Re, in the midst of the coils of thy mehen-serpent." The project names the boundary, not the contents. The other serpent — the hostile one, Apep — got the working directory (pepa, the same letters cycled). The protective one got the work.

The method

This site makes two kinds of statements, and it keeps them apart. Documented means: a primary text, a measurement, or standard scholarship — checkable by anyone, with the citation on the page. Interpretation means: a reading, a synthesis, a way of seeing — offered, never smuggled. Every page separates the two at the bottom. The rule of the house is to grade the claim, not the bibliography, and to repair the models when they are caught wrong: the central argument has already been through one adversarial review and one full rewrite for clarity, and both are on record in the archive.

The second rule is older: no images of the Original. Naming is limiting — in Egypt, to know a god's secret name was to hold power over him — and this project refuses to limit the one thing the inquiry points at. The models are described, graded, and fenced; what they point to is left unnamed. That silence is called the seal, and it is kept on purpose.

The sources

The primary text is the Bremner-Rhind papyrus (British Museum EA 10188): R. O. Faulkner's hieroglyphic edition (Bibliotheca Aegyptiaca III, 1933) and his translation (Journal of Egyptian Archaeology 23, 1937, and 24, 1938). The older synthesis of Egyptian magic is E. A. W. Budge's (Egyptian Magic, 1901). The classical testimony is Plato's Timaeus 22. Biblical material is cited by verse. Physics and biology claims carry their papers — Miyake et al. 2012 (the 774 event), Wallner et al. 2016 (supernova iron-60), Gräslund & Price 2012 (the 536 dust veil), Tahara & Obara 2014 (shell-less chicks).
